Shop in the mall while waiting

The most common emotions that we’ve gathered from customers in the queue are impatience, loneliness, insecurity and frustration. After evaluation, we realize the importance of a waiter being physically there for crowd control has the ability to give hope and increase patience levels for customers as the waiter’s appearance symbolized a chance that the queue will be shortening.

However, we still see the importance of conserving manual labour from taking orders. We still wish to implement the need to save time as the customers in the queue takes their time to order the food while waiters served the customers in the restaurant itself to enhance efficiency.

Therefore, we came up with a Hologram Waiting Companion! It is a virtual, screen-projected image that resembles real-life human. This hologram serves to provide menus to waiting customers who wish to order, as well as keep them entertained. Several functions designed into this hologram are: ability to detect when customers are impatient and have the thought of quitting the queue, ability to converse, sing and entertain customers (especially customers who are alone) and making waiting time more fun and easy to pass. We believe that our hologram can serve to be the “waiter” as well as the “friend” that will both provide a better reason for customers to stay in the queue, increase patience, provide hope with its physical presence, yet at the same time, saving space unlike the previous conveyor belt and saving manual labour from the restaurant itself.

An add-on feature which we designed is a Mobile Application known as Easy Dine. This application serves to help customers locate a restaurant near them using a satellite mapping system, categories each restaurant into closed for the day / available to dine / popular choice sections, as well as sorting restaurants into map view or into a list with contact information.

10 Things You Can Do While Waiting In Line

If you are waiting for something to happen while waiting in line at the store or at an appointment, there are several things that you can do to continue with your day. Here are ten things to do while you are waiting in any public area.

Plan. If you are at a place in your day where you have either finished the tasks that needed time management, or if you have set your goals, then find a way to move on to the next task and plan what needs to be done next. By setting new goals and time limits, you will be able to find a way to continue to reach your goals for the rest of your day.

Refocus. If you have a busy schedule, use the time that you are waiting to refocus. Go over your schedule for the day, find what you need to do for the rest of the day, and figure out what to do to re-manage your time. If you have a handheld device or a notebook with a list, you can look over what your list has for the day, as well as what your goals are.

Make more lists. If you find that several of your goals have been reached for the day, or if you want to move forward onto a different task, making a different list or rearranging the list that you already have is an easy thing to do while you are waiting. Once you are out of the line or have stepped out of your appointment, you will know exactly what needs to get done next.

Organize your time. If you have your calendar with you, and have already set your lists, then figure out how much time it will take you to complete the tasks and goals that you have on your schedule for that day. Planning out how long it will take you to finish your tasks of the day is an effective use of time while waiting in line or waiting for an appointment.

Bring mail or correspondence to sort through. If you have mail that will need to go out to friends, or things that you need to organize, you can bring these with you. While you are waiting, it is an easy thing to sort through or read while waiting.

Make phone calls. If you have business partners or friends that need you to call them, this is a great time to do so. Because you are waiting in line, you will be able to keep the phone calls short and to the point.

Bring along the smaller tasks. Sometimes, there are smaller things that need to be completed or looked through. If you need to finish a smaller task, doing so while waiting in line is a great time to catch up on what you may have not necessarily have done when the focus was on the larger tasks and goals that were set for the day.

Re-energize. If the day is particularly busy for you, this is a good time to not do anything except wait. Use waiting time as a time to calm down, find your focus, and relax. Downtime is always good and necessary in any day that is full of activities and planning.

Read. If you know that your wait is going to be longer, you can catch up on reading that you need to do. This can help you relax. You can also read things that will help you with your progress for the rest of the day. Reading can often keep you on track for the rest of your day as well.

Catch up on the news. Many different places will have magazines and newspapers available right by the checkout stand, or wherever you are waiting. If you don’t bring your own material to read, it’s always good to keep up with the latest news and happenings in the world. This is good to do if you have already organized the rest of your day and made your plans.

If you are going to a place where you think there will be waiting time, make sure to always bring along your planning devices, or any smaller tasks that you will have to do for the rest of the day. This will help you in never having to stand in line or wait for a long amount of time without having anything to do.

Wherever you are waiting, it is always a good time to reschedule, re-energize and continue with your lists and plans that need to be organized for the rest of the day. By using waiting time as a way to continue setting your goals, the rest of your day will run smoothly and more effectively as you are able to continue with your plans.

The 10 things that are listed in the article are Plan, Refocus, Make more lists, Organize your time, Bring mail or correspondence to sort through, Make phone calls, Bring along the smaller tasks, Re-energize, Read and Catch up on the news.
I felt what listed in the article were rather useful for those who are really busy and that they have to plan their schedule to make it more organise. Thus, it helps to free their mind from the many schedules they have to do at one. However, that’s only what they CAN DO. The article suggested things that they can do while waiting, but there’s nothing creative or out of the box. You can plan, re-energise… anywhere. I can do that on the train when I’m on the back home too!
Waiting IS mundane… yes, by making use of the time to plan and re-energise helps to occupy some time. What about people that don’t have plans…? What about people who are queuing for food outside the restaurant that are frustrated and wanted to get in so badly?
We have to do something to keep them occupy! Of cause, in a fun way! We can also allow people to choose whether they want to stay in the queue or go shop around the mall during the wait.
People can walk around and not just stay there to plan, refocus… They can make use of the time to walk around and do what they wanted to do during the wait.
This way we can change people views from thinking that waiting is a mundane thing to do! Dining in the restaurant could be just a click away!
Instead of only having the customers to wait in the queue, especially those who are waiting alone. We can get people together to interact. Example, looking at the menu together… These way it helps them to make their queuing experience more fun!

To queue or not to queue?

credit

If there's one thing that separates humankind from the animals, it's that human beings wait in lines. To make a deposit at the bank, to pay for groceries, even to vote -- we've all learned to queue, one behind the other. And we've learned, if not to like it, then at least to grin and bear it.

But time is money, and both individuals and businesses may suffer as lines get longer and longer, says Tel Aviv University's Prof. Refael Hassin, a mathematician. He has been utilizing game theory to study wait times in line and understand their economic consequences. His findings -- many of which turn common sense upside-down -- could also turn the service industry on its head, help businesses increase profits, and make society become a more pleasant place for everyone.

Results of his research were published recently in the journal Management Science.

An Espresso While You Wait

Businesses can implement systems to cut down on waiting time and decrease the number of frustrated customers who leave without making a purchase. Prof. Hassin notes that there are many solutions that companies could apply with an eye to improving customer service. An entry fee to enter a faster line is one option.

"I don't suggest that companies hire more cashiers at the sight of a growing queue," he says. "With some basic analysis, however, peak times of wait lines can be determined, and businesses can ensure that customers stay happy while waiting, by offering them entertainment like TV or maybe cappuccinos."

But sometimes the lines themselves are the problem, Prof. Hassin believes. His study suggests that waiting times are affected by a number of random variables, and that people who gather in a crowd might be serviced more efficiently than people standing in line. Sometimes, disorder creates its own order.

In an ice-cream shop, for example, an arriving customer who crowds to the display case will experience shorter waiting times for service than when the same number of customers wait patiently in line. This means that more ice cream will be served and consequently more money will end up in the till. "If there are 10 people in an ice-cream shop, on average you will be served after the fifth person if you do not wait in an organized line," says Prof. Hassin.

Prof. Hassin went on to explain, "Of course I might get served 1st, 2nd, or even last. But on average the statistics are based on human decision-making strategies: If one is deciding whether or not to enter a shop and sees many people there already, most would prefer an unordered queue –– because in this circumstance there is a good chance of being served sooner than if one was waiting patiently in line."

Does Democracy Need to Wait Its Turn?

Customers as well as businesses can learn from Prof. Hassin's research. While it seems intuitive that fairness is served when people wait patiently in line until their turn comes up, Prof. Hassin says that, when it comes to queuing up, democracy is more honored in the breach than in the observance.

"People in lines tend to think only about themselves and ignore their impact on others," says Prof. Hassin. "If I join the line and you come later, you will wait longer because of me. Customers are often selfish and ignore the effect their behavior has on others." This is why in some cases it's better to manage a queue in an unorganized non-democratic way, serve in reverse order of arrival, or conceal queue length information from potential customers, he explains.

On the Ice cream shop example given, queue that are crowd around feel shorter than those with lines. Is interesting ain’t it? I feel it too. It’s a form of psychology. You will think that you might have a chance to go first. This might help in our proposal.

On the last part of the article, Prof. Hassin mention that People in lines tend to think only about themselves and ignore their impact on others. This shows the behaviour or customers in the queue, they tend to be self centered when queuing. Thus, we have to think of a design that solve the queuing problem into something enjoyable and at the meantime allow the customers to interact with one another.

A quick fix for queues

Queuing, standing in line...it's what we do well, but complain about the most. Thankfully, science is coming to the rescue as researchers in Taiwan have devised a formula that could revolutionize restaurants, post offices, customer service desks, and theater ticket sales everywhere. Business management professor Pen-Yuan Liao of the National United University in Miaoli, Taiwan, that queuing as one of life's inevitabilities when seeking fast food, restaurant services, banking and postal services, and shopping and buying tickets for events and activities, or waiting for your turn on a theme park ride. No one enjoys queuing, so even small reductions in waiting time will result in better quality of service and lead to enhancing customer loyalty and so increased sales, Liao says.

"The profit loss from business resulting from inefficient queuing systems is quite difficult to estimate," Liao explains, "but there is a creative and effective way to formulate the costs of waiting and so improve customer satisfaction and sales."

Liao has devised a scientific formula he refers to as the "balking index", which is referred to by the Greek letter theta. Ironically, this symbol is used elsewhere in science as shorthand for temperature, a parameter that often rises among people standing in ineffective queues. Liao has encapsulated theta as relating the expected queue length and the mean arrival rate in a given time period. Multiplying the balking index, the queue length, and the mean arrival rate gives you the number of frustrated customers who will leave their position in the queue in that time period.

"Estimating balking loss enables a store manager or other person in charge of staffing levels to determine the optimal number of servers by minimizing total cost, including service cost and balking loss," says Liao. He has successfully tested the formula in advising a fast food manager on how many staff to have serving at any given time depending on the balking index.

"By using this formula, approach, restaurants and other services that have queues can cut costs and improve customer loyalty," he says, "Customers benefit from much reduced queuing times."

I was doing some research on restaurants for assignment 2 and I came across some interesting restaurants theme concept! Thought it would be fun to share!

Many credits to - http://www.toxel.com/inspiration/2009/06/20/10-unusual-and-creative-restaurants/

Underwater Restaurant in Maldives

Prison Restaurant in Tokyo

Haha!!!

Toilet Restaurant in Taiwan

In The Dark Restaurant in London

Would you want to dine in such restaurant? It would be interesting and something you won't get out of when you visit some other restaurants!

Personally I felt that it's interactive! Between the customers and waitresses! Especially the last example, Blind waiters who lead customers to and through the pitch-black dining experience. Strangers get together and line in one straight rows to be lead into the restaurant.

It spark me some idea on assignment 2...

It might help in making queuing up to get into the restaurants more fun with theme based restaurants.

Seoul Airport toilet

This was what I found at Seoul's girls toilet during the June 2 weeks holiday. (Yes!!! I went on a trip to Seoul and Jeju Island! )

I did not video down it but I just took an image of it. It reminds me of my toilet design for UCD that I've posted months back. Remember I've mention that I need to cover those seats with toilet rolls then I'm able to sit on them? Yea! My idea is a tag bit high tad.

BUT THIS....

WORKS FOR ME! :D I like!

Found a video on it:

The red button at the side of the toilet flush are buttons to control the plastics protector seats. I'm so happy to see such toilet seats at the airport! Totally enjoy the whole experience!

Sapien Bookcase

This is perfect for those who love to show off their book collection! (I'm one of them)

You can creatively arrange your books in an impressive vertical display. Two sizes are available, short and tall. The cool feature of this is that when fully loaded, the bookcase virtually disappears behind the books, as if there's no support in between, just the books alone!

What is the future of interactive Media?

My simple term for Interactive Media?

Interactive Media allow us designers to THINK for it's users and THINK of what can we do to improve on our daily life and experiences with New media we have. Technology.

Interactive Media have no limits! Be it the previous posts I'd posted on touch screen which was the revolution of technology, or some interactive daily design(object), which does not make use of any Media. THEY ALL COME HAND IN HAND.
How do they come hand in hand?
Both are trying to bring experiences to another level. This what brings them together.

What I feel is that these interactive design are the first layer to implement on experiences, then they bring in Media... to FURTHER ENHANCE the experiences. Since now we're living in 21st century, everything have to be media base. (Sometimes I got sick and tired of it, I feel like going back to basic. Living simple. Really.)

Don't you think it's tiring to be always on a rat race? Catching up with the newest gadgets in town, the latest trends, fashion...

Media media media media... New media have been taking over our life. Half of our time we're busy catching up with the media but we fail to realize that, or maybe that's what we want...
Thus, the more we get from Interactive Media, the higher expectation for the next...

Example in my daily life:

Miss A: I really love the Transformers movie I watched last week!
Miss V: I thought Iron man was better! (Since it came out first.. before the movie Transformer! Thus, I'll feel Iron man was better than Transformer. And expected more from Transformer.)

This is a psychology on human.

Not that I want to use Movie as an example... but it's a good example for Media. People expect more and if one don't meet the requirement, then, it mean nothing to them. And things SPREADS FAST IN new media.

People too pick up things quickly.

This video shows an architect name Gary Chang, one day he decided to design a 344 sq. ft. apartment to be able to change into 24 different designs, all by just sliding panels and walls. He calls this the "Domestic Transformer"!!!

Look at how he slides through the walls and find himself into the kitchen, bath tub... etc

Just like Gary Chang's concept of his mini apartment, the future of interactive Media is THAT FLEXIBLE... There are no limits, nothing is impossible in the future of interactive Media.

Such Auto LED will be frequently use in household instead of malls, public places...

Hookbox

The Hookbox is a unique design option that kills two birds with one stone, so to speak. Its interesting shape will add a modern touch to any spot that needs a hook and storage. The nontoxic glaze is environmentally friendly, long-lasting and adds a high gloss finish to the Hookbox's exterior. A single Hookbox can hold an upwards of 12 lbs on its hook and 2 lbs within its container.

Sun Jar from SUCK UK

Sun Jar (Designed by top designers Tobias Wong)
It captures the sun's natural light into a jar, store it, and release the warm glow in the evening for everyone to enjoy.

This little frosted glass jar houses a solar cell, battery and LED lights fastened by a waterproof vacuum-seal lid. Before you can release the magic, you must find a sunny spot and rest the piece in full sun for an entire day.

In the evening you can showcase its charm and impress your family and friends with the warm ambient sun-like glow. You can get an impressive five hours of mood lighting despite the jar's small profile. This inventive piece stands a little over six inches in height. It turns on and off automatically.

Environmentally friendly, compact and versatile. I would like to have one!

An e-mail counting t-shirt

How do you wash the Tee-shirt? Haha! That was the first thing that come across my mind. And Why have a t-shirt that counts unread e-mails? Haven’t we exposed enough electromagnetic waves in our daily lives?

This DIY project was created using an Arduino(What we have done in class with Mr Andrew) Lilypad and a Bluetooth dongle. Once done, the shirt would display the number of unread e-mails on your chest. An Android phone continuously does the checking of your inbox for new messages.

The Rolling Bench & Deer Stools

Why didn't I thought of this!?

The Rolling Bench
"Turn the handle on the side of the bench and the seat will rotate to expose the dry side of the seat, and you will be able to seat without getting wet."

Now we don't have to worry that we can't find dry benches after the rain! Especially in country like Singapore, rainy seasons. It's a simple yet a good design.

Deer stool
(Designed by Jeroen Wesselink)

It comes with different colours! credits

"My Deer stool functions as a stool (obviously) and a modern piece of wall art. Think of those popular deer heads but way softer. It just hangs there unobtrusively - a great addition to any modern space."

It have a fun and unique sitting! I adore how it's 2 in 1 where it can be a modern piece of art or just a seat.

Food Plates

This were the two food plate design that I've pick from here: Credits
Two of my favorite design.

K-wine Food Plates

The difference between K-wine and a traditional plate with glass holder is that K-wine moves the weight from the side to the middle of the plate. Therefore, even if the glass is full, the weight of the plate is balanced. Great user centered design!

Wasara Paper Dishes

Beautiful disposable paper dishes have curved corners that naturally follow the shape of fingers or thumbs for easy gripping, deliberately designed so that people can hold their plates while they mingle

Staircase Drawers

There's a couple of unusual yet creative staircase design in here: Credits

Staircase Drawers:

But I love this the most! Save space + more place for shoes/ heels + magazines + books

Floating Staircase:

Comparing this and the staircase drawers design. I won't want it to be my home staircase design. Like what the title says, it's like floating! I'd migraines and it can get pretty bad. And when I'd headaches, I'd problem with going down stairs to get a cup of warm water. I'll probably feel safer when there's something to hold or grip on to while going down the stairs.

It might be nice to look at but ... it just not feasible for me.

Trains that don't stop!

Concept that allow trains to move without stopping between stations! That's the future of our train experience!

(clip in mandarin)

No time is wasted. The bullet train is moving all the time. If there are 30 stations between Beijing and Guangzhou, just stopping and accelerating again at each station will waste both energy and time.

A mere 5 min stop per station (elderly passengers cannot be hurried) will result in a total loss of 5 min x 30 stations or 2.5 hours of train journey time!

How it works

1. For those who are boarding the train : The passengers at a station embarks onto to a connector cabin way before the train even arrives at the station. When the train arrives, it will not stop at all. It just slows down to pick up the connector cabin which will move with the train on the roof of the train.

While the train is still moving away from the station, those passengers will board the train from the connector cabin mounted on the train's roof. After fully unloading all its passengers, the cabin connector cabin will be moved to the back of the train so that the next batch of outgoing passengers who want to alight at the next station will board the connector cabin at the rear of the train roof.

2. For those who are getting off: As stated after fully unloading all its passengers, the cabin connector cabin will be moved to the back of the train so that the next batch of outgoing passengers who want to alight at the next station will board the connector cabin at the rear of the train roof. When the train arrives at the next station, it will simply drop the whole connector cabin at the station itself and leave it behind at the station.

The outgoing passengers can take their own time to disembark at the station while the train had already left. At the same time, the train will pick up the incoming embarking passengers on another connector cabin in the front part of the train's roof. So the train will always drop one connector cabin at the rear of its roof and pick up a new connector cabin in the front part of the train's roof at each station.

DANIEL ROZIN - Mirrors

Daniel Rozin is an artist that specialize in interactive digital art. Link to his bio

I decided to do a study on him as he is well known of his installations and sculptures that have the unique ability to change and respond to the presence and point of view of the viewer.

These are a few of his popular work:

Wooden Mirror - 1991

Built in 1999, this is the first mechanical mirror DANIEL ROZIN built. This piece explores the line between digital and physical, using a warm and natural material such as wood to portray the abstract notion of digital pixels.

I like how the video capture and it send the black and white pixelate images to the computer, then the black and white values corresponds on the wood to twit to the right angle. It sound complicated but it actually work! It's a lot of technical work and I really don't know how he come out with such a crazy yet amazing idea!

It's like a mirror but it's not a mirror. He understand the art of pixels and using that to form such a beautiful art piece.

Weave Mirror - 2007

Credits
768 C shaped prints 768 motors, video camera, control electronics.
Size 57 inches H, 78 inches W, 8 Inches D
Weave Mirror assembles 768 motorized and laminated C-shaped prints along the surface of a picture plane that texturally mimics a homespun basket. A seemingly organic smoky portrait comes in focus to the sound made by the sculpture’s moving parts. Informed by traditions of both textile design and new media, the Weave Mirror paints a picture of viewers using a gradual rotation in greyscale value on each C-ring. A playful juxtaposition between the rustic and photographic, this sculpture is suspended from the ceiling. Its functional circuitry and wiring is visible behind the picture plane, exposing its craft.

At first sight I thought the material used to make this mirror was some cloth or fabric (that are use to weave) since the title was name Weave Mirror. Little did I expect it was shaped prints from motors.

From his works, we can tell he's very enthusiastic about mirrors and half of his designs were about mirrors.

Hopefully his next piece of art work on Mirrors, maybe in a few years down the road, he will create an image that look-alike but somehow the perfect side of us.

In today society, everyone were into perfection. Plastic surgeries is like a norm. People want to look perfect; long and sharp nose, big eyes, bigger eye lids, bigger boobs, slender arms and waists... etc

Maybe... just maybe... he can create a mirror that can reflect on how one can transform to someone that they wish to look like. Haha!

You can say 'lying to self' but it's somewhere we can escape from reality.
Just some random thoughts that come across my mind..

The Alive Gallery

(English version)

(Korean version)

Do you know that there's one at Singapore, Downtown east now! I've not been there but I heard from my friends it was okay, not as good as what they've expected. Well, we've to be there to find out for ourselves! :)

Paintings that talk and move... That's not what other Museums you've been too isn't?
Now even Museums go interactive! You don't see children in Museums smiling away but this children enjoys this Museum! Nothing is impossible these days...

This can encourage children and teenagers to visit more of such Museum. I really like the idea of your painting become an interactive art work. It's like a new art movement created! It inspire young designers like me to work harder to have our interactive art work put on such Museum.

All about touch-screens and technology

Yes, this post will be talking about touch-screens and technology in design.

A touch screen is a computer display screen that is also an input device. The screens are sensitive to pressure; a user interacts with the computer by touching pictures or words on the screen.

Something that's not new but worth sharing!

The technology of touch screen and interactive design...

Let's start from this:

This video shows 4 scenes of interactive installation. Featuring interactive reactive water, smoke, reactive dice and an interaction with conway's game of life. It's the start of such display made. They thought it would sell if such displays were put in shopping centers for shoppers to interact and they see further market in such installation.

"A projection based interactive installation for Lenovo's head office showroom in North Carolina. A large body of 3D virtual water is projected along the corridor's wall. Visitors walking by are optically tracked and their motion is translated to ripples and waves along the wall."

I thought it was quite cool with the given technology 4 years back... I can walk all day along the corridor and never get bored! HAHA! :P

Eye click - http://www.eyeclick.com/

They sell interactive floors, surfaces, tables, windows...

This interactive design can be found in shopping centers now. I believe this was like 4 years ago when touch screen became so popular in designs. People like the experience of getting things done with just a finger click away and also the feedback they receive after clicking. Maybe this was why iphone came about. Hehe!

Now we experience such touch-screen interactive application in our daily life. Just take our phones for example, most of us are already carrying a smart phone!

And not to forget our newest ipad in town:
I've caught a few people carrying them on MRT already and People were staring at them! I mean literally STARE. O_O

4 years ago, touch screen was W-O-W! Everybody make a big hoo-ha over it. Now, majority are carrying them where ever they go, be it their Nintendo DS, Smart phone...etc

I wonder what is 4 years from now? ...

Musical Coffee Table

"Amusity is a interactive tangible user interface coffee table, that displays your entire music collection. Amusity allows you to play, watch the music video and see additional information about each song. In addition meta data such as popularity and genre control the way the music is displayed - popular songs in the center, rare songs in the outskirts. In addition activating a certain song will display recommended songs based on past play lists."

It's quite a good idea to make Coffee Table musical. But I think it can only be place at home? I thought it would be cool if they place such coffee table on Starbucks, Coffee beans but then it will be very noisy as all the tables produce 'music'. You won't want your favorite "music" become "noise"!!! (They can provide headset!)

I really like the visual effect they see on top of the Coffee table, it's really futuristic and high tech. Able to see lyrics, details of the songs... or even profile of the singers. Let say this song was sang by a new artist, I can click it easily and know more about her.

I believe this coffee table can bring people together with music and open up more topics on music. I'm sure music lovers will love this interactive design.

Fun theory - Bottle Bank Arcade

Again! Fun theory! What I like about Fun theory is that they solve problems with fun and simple way. Not my futuristic, advanced technology way. But back to basic.

I love solving problems with 'fun' method!!!

It's a good way to encourage people to Recycle bottles while having fun!

Some other examples I found:

Transparent bin - Found on google

Although there's no feedback when you throw the bin or any interaction, I feel that this design still manage to get it's objectives - Recycling plastic bottles.
It's in a very clean and sleek design, with transparent outer that allows users/passer-bys to see what's inside the bin.

Of cause, this design should never be use for normal bins that we see in public. It's an eye sore to design such a thing! However, this particular design serve its purpose as a recycling bottle. People will only bin recycling bottle as passer-bys can tell what the users are actually throwing. You won't want to be embarrassed in public that you can't read English, or you're blind to differentiate this recycling bin and normal bins.

"Is something that will help you do your bit by “promoting composting from biodegradable waste.” What you do is, for instance, while tossing an apple into the dustbin, bio-reactive substances based on photo catalysis start rehashing the trash as compost. And you don’t even have to worry about the extremely foul smell that dustbins release because this bio-reactive substance removes odors and speeds up the process. The company hopes to have these huge bins in public spaces where people can drop their biodegradable trash from which compost can later be collected and used. The bin is made of stainless steel, aluminum, glass, polypropylene and polyethylene."

Instead of recycling only, this bin helps to compost biodegradable waste! How cool is that!

Did this using 3D MAX - some rough ideas of bins in public:

The combination of all the research: (for fun)

The green bin is what we can see on public. There's this number of trash collected on the bin itself to keep track of the trash. It sort of encourage people to bin. The bottom of the bin it's the recycling section where people recycle their bottles, paper and cans.

Similarly, using 3D max. This is my second rough idea:

People can throw and bin with the target. Amount of trash collected also will be shown. It's like the game of basketball. Just dunk it! The round cylinder in the middle is the Ash tray for smokers.

Fun theory - The world's deepest bin

After watching this video, I got inspire to research on rubbish bins! Well, we see bins everywhere, every single day! It's our daily routine to bin something!

But how to improve our experience and sort of encourage people to bin?

Credit - Roly Poly

Adapted the all time favourite office game -shooting at the bin, and designed the Poly Poly bin. When being shoot at, responsively the bin will give physical feedback by rocking around.

Another shooting game for office bins - papers. With targets and points. The bin itself were made of paper, its a way to reuse paper!

This was designed for the beach. It's a good idea as we seldom see bins on the beach.

313's HMV Survey

I was doing a survey on HMV last Sunday with my group mates: Michelle, Farida and Jeanie at 313 shopping mall. I swear I can remember all the names of our 15 survey-ers! Hehe. I won't write down their names though! (For privacy sake!)

These are our pictures evidences:

With Mr. professor

The 313's security guard(lady) was eye-ing on us, therefore, we just smile back (:D) and pretend to take photos of ourselves:

Helpful adults!

Overall, I feel that our survey went really well! It's better than what I expected! To be honest, before I make my way down to HMV, I feel really unsure of conducting a survey in the shopping mall. However, we quickly managed to get a survey done on our first attempt. This really perks me up. Haha!

We usually target on people that carries a HMV plastic bag and we station ourselves a few shops away from HMV's. Maybe we're too thick-skin(to approach every possibilities), we get everything done within an hour!

Although we had to always keep a look-out on the securities of HMV's and 313's (Both sides), we managed to get 15 surveys done. Some survey-ers were really helpful to the extend that they help us to correct our questions to improvise on it when they know it's for school.

I try to make small conversations with the survey-ers while they're doing the surveys and I realized that I get more out of them as compared to the surveys paper they do. They tend to share more verbally than answering our questions on a paper.

Cheers! (;
